WHAT A FAREWELL — Their people. Their stories. Together. A starting point for a personal farewell 1. THE PERSON What three words describe them? What made them laugh? What would they want people to remember? 2. THE PEOPLE Who should be there? Who might need travel help, an accessible venue, a quiet space, or a way to contribute from a distance? 3. THE FAREWELL Would a church service followed by a separate celebration feel right, or a secular gathering? Would another day give everyone more space? Discuss any church service with the parish and funeral arrangements with your funeral provider. 4. THEIR PRESENCE IN THE DAY Choose a photograph or, if it feels right, a family-approved illustrated portrait/avatar. Let a love of gardening, travel, music, or Sunday lunch inspire the theme. Create memory cards with their name, a favourite saying, a recipe, or a small story; leave room for guests to add their own. Choose a keepsake to take home. Choose a favourite wine or alcohol-free drink, a meal, a meaningful song, photographs, a reading, and a few stories. Nobody needs to speak or join an activity if they do not want to. Make space for serenity: an unhurried welcome, a quiet corner, an optional toast, and no expectation that anyone must feel cheerful. 5. THE PRACTICALITIES Agree a guest count, location, budget, and one family contact. Think about weather, transport, dietary needs, accessibility, and a quiet corner. 6. THEIR WISHES If planning ahead, share these ideas with someone you trust. This guide records preferences; it is not a booking or a legal document.
